The Cougars headed out to Rocklin to participate in the Wolverine Classic. We opened with San Mateo and mistakes getting out of the van cost us the game. We were not ready to play and early mistakes proved to be too much to come back from. Kelsey Hawley pitched a complete game in the loss, giving up 11 hits, walking one and striking out two.
The hitting was led by Andin Anderson who collected 2 hits including her 5th homerun. Amanda Butler and Veronica Rothenhausler each had two hits. San Mateo 6 Lassen 5
In game two on Saturday we faced a highly ranked San Jose City College team. The game was played well defensively but the offense struggled and the pitching was just average against this good hitting team. Caity Cunningham and Rani Quiring split the game on the rubber. San Jose 8 Lassen 0
The third game on Saturday was at 7:00pm. We beat Modesto in a hard fought game. We got off to a good start and handled a late run by Modesto and several calls from the umpires that did not work out in our favor. Kelsey Hawley again pitched a complete game. She gave up 5 hits while striking out 10 and walking one on her way to registering the victory.
The offense was led by Natalie Cook who had 2 hits including a homerun. Sarah Harwell and Veronica Rothenhausler had three hits each.
Lassen 6 Modesto 4
On Sunday we had a 9:00am start against American River College. Again we got off to a slow start, rebounded to take the lead, and then faded late in the game. Caity Cunningham started the game and got relief from Kelsey Hawley.
Offensively the Cougars were led by Amanda Butler who hit a grand slam in the fourth.American River 8 Lassen 5
Our fifth game of the weekend was against Solano College and marked our best overall effort of the weekend. Kelsey Hawley pitched another complete game for the victory. She gave up 6 hits while striking out 4 and walking one.
Coach Robertson asked his hitters to not give away any at bats and they responded. Multiple hit people in this game were Pear Buehrle, Veronica Rothenhausler and Sarah Harwell who also hit a homerun.Lassen 8 Solano 5
Coaches Comments: We came in with the hope of building off the two Feather River wins on Wednesday, but early mistakes in all the games hurt our efforts. We competed as well this weekend as we ever have, but we need to eliminate silly mistakes getting out of the blocks. They work hard and it will and has paid off. We have not got hot yet. We show some signs, but we are still waiting for the extended period of superior play.
On Wednesday March 19th, the Cougar Softball team hosted the College of the Siskiyous in a doubleheader. In the first game, Caity Cunningham rebounded from a couple of bad starts to throw a pretty good game. The final score was no indication of how good her performance really was. Andin Anderson led the offense with two singles.
Siskiyous 8 Lassen 0
The nightcap was just an ugly game from the beginning. Kelsey Hawley, coming off her best start of the year, a one hit complete game shutout of Fresno City, got roughed up in the first inning and the Cougars never recovered. The defense again struggled to play to their potential and the offense was held to one run on four hits. The only good thing that came from these games is the bad feeling we were left with. They played well and we did not.

On Wednesday March 26th the Cougars headed out of town with lots of questions about the future of their season. They answered some of those questions with two pretty well played games.
In the first game Caity Cunningham continued to build off her last outing by throwing a complete game four hit victory. She struck out one and walked one but exhibited complete control of her pitches. She kept her opponents off balance and the defense played well in the win. Nicole Laporte contributed with a big two out RBI single to start the scoring in the second inning that led to a three run rally. Natalie Cook also collected two singles in the winning effort.
Lassen 3 Feather 2
The second game was another well pitched game for Kelsey Hawley. She responded to her worst outing of the year with one of her better outings. She threw the first six innings, allowing no runs on five hits. She struck out six and did not allow a walk. Veronica Rothenhausler had three hits in as many at bats including two doubles. Natalie Cook continued her good hitting collecting two more hits.
Lassen 7 Feather 4
Coaches Comments: I was really proud of the effort that we gave against Feather. Coming into that game we were really struggling. I questioned our competitive efforts over our last 15 games. They responded well and hopefully will let their season grow from this point on. They deserve it. They have worked hard and weathered this very tough stretch. It would have been very easy to let this one get away on the road, but they fought like their backs were to the wall, answered many of their questions that they created, and came back with two big wins. I could not have been prouder of how the girls fought to get back on track.
March Madness Tournament
3/15-16
The Cougars came into the weekend trying to find a way to change the tempo of their games and to piece together several well played games in a row. Although the wins and losses of the weekend don’t show it, we did manage to improve in the areas that we had struggled in and hopefully will benefit in the upcoming games because of the adjustments that were made.
The first game was against a very good Sierra College team. The game was pitched well and defended well, but as you will see in the rest of the games, the offense just did not click. Kelsey Hawley started and pitched well, but allowed the leadoff runner to get on in four of her five innings and they chipped away for runs. The offense was led by hits by Natalie Cook, Amanda Butler and Sarah Harwell. Sierra 6 Lassen 1
In Game 2 of the weekend, the Cougars continued to adjust their game and improve the areas of concern. Caity Cunningham rebounded from a couple of bad starts to throw well enough to win. Rani Quiring pitched two scoreless innings hoping the offense could catch up. The defense played well and the tempo of the game continued to improve. The offense struggled collecting just four hits. Heather Fisher accounted for 2 of those hits and Pear Buehrle scored the lone run. Hartnell 3 Lassen 1
The third game on Saturday was against Fresno City College. Kelsey Hawley threw a complete game, one hit shutout. The one hit came on a controversial safe call on an infield hit. Kelsey walked two and struck out one and the defense was absolutely flawless. The offense made the most out of their three hits and four walks. Natalie Cook continued her great defense at shortstop and got on base twice. Veronica Rothenhausler scored the lone run for the Cougars. Lassen 1 Fresno 0
Sunday started the single elimination part of the tournament. The Cougars swung the bat much better, but some untimely pitching mistakes and some shaky outfield play ended up costing dearly. Pear Buehrle, Andin Anderson, Veronica Rothenhausler and Sarah Harwell all had multiple hit games and all starters collected a hit. It was a 7-6 game in the fifth and then the game got away. The mistakes ended up being too much to overcome. Solano 15 Lassen 6
Coaches Notes: We are bound to get hot. This team just has not gotten on a roll yet. They have pieced together a complete game here and there but have not yet strung a bunch of good games together. They improved many areas of concern this weekend, but still struggled putting complete games together over a period of time. This team has high expectations and can still accomplish all of them. We all expect to get on a roll very soon by just playing to our ability in all areas over a long stretch of games.
Home Opener
Lassen College played their home opener on Saturday March 8th with a doubleheader against Yuba College.
Kelsey Hawley earned the win with 5 innings of work. She scattered 6 hits and allowed only two earned runs. She did not have her good stuff, but competed well enough to allow the offense to take over. The offense was led by Andin Anderson, Pear Buehrle, Amanda Butler, Natalie Cook, Sarah Harwell, Kelsey Hawley, and Veronica Rothenhausler who all had multiple hit games. Lassen 13 Yuba 5
In the second game Caity Cunningham threw 5 shutout innings in a game that was very close until late. Caity struck out 1 and walked nobody while scattering 8 hits. Rani Quiring pitched a perfect last inning to preserve the win and shutout.
Offensively the Cougars were held in check until the later innings. Natalie Cook had 2 hits and Veronica Rothenhausler was a perfect 4 for 4 with 4 RBI’S. Lassen 8 Yuba 0
Golden Valley Conference Opener
The first conference game against Shasta College was a close game until Shasta broke open a one run game with 5 runs in the 6th inning. Kelsey Hawley took the loss despite possibly pitching the best 5 innings she has thrown all year.
Our defensive wows appeared again with the Cougars committing 5 errors. We squandered many chances offensively and created a ton of opportunities for our opponent to score. That is not a good combination. Amanda Butler was the only player with multiple hits including a homerun.
Shasta 8 Lassen 3
The second game started poorly and did not get much better. Starting pitcher Caity Cunningham struggled giving up 4 runs in the first inning before being replaced. Caity did re-enter the game late and to her credit threw better.
The lone offensive highlight was a long homerun hit by starting catcher Sarah Harwell.
The Cougars leave Friday for a tournament in Fremont hoping to find their true identity and what impact they are going to be able to have.
Shasta 12 Lassen 3
Coaches Notes: I really enjoy these girls. They work hard and aren’t scared, but sooner or later they have to find someone to stop the bleeding when things start going wrong. We have everything that it takes to make the playoffs but having it and showing it, is two different things. |
