Federal Pell Grants

Pell grants are awarded to qualifying full-time and part-time students. You must qualify financially, be in an eligible program at an eligible school or college, and not have already earned a bachelor's or professional degree. Recent changes in federal regulations effective with the 2009-2010 Summer term now make Pell Grants available year-round for some students.  The intent of the new regulation is to encourage students to complete their academic studies sooner.

In the past students who attended school full-time during the Fall and Spring semesters were ineligible to receive Pell during the Summer because they had utilized their Pell eligibility for that award year.  With the implementation of the new regulations these students are now eligible to receive a second Pell Grant as long as the student is registered for at least six (6) units and meets other eligibility criteria.

Lassen Community College will continue to use the Summer semester as a trailer for the 2009-10 school year.  This is consistent with previous processing years.  Students who attended school less than full-time during the Fall and Spring semesters will be eligible to receive their remaining Pell Grant eligibility for the Summer semester.  To meet the new federal regulations students who attended full-time during the Fall and Spring semesters will now be awarded a second Pell Grant for the Summer semester if they are registered for at least six (6) units for the Summer semester.

During the 2009-10 award year, which includes the Summer 2010 semester, Lassen Community College will not make provisions for the 2010-11 student Pell Grant eligibility during the cross-over payment period and eligible students must make academic progression.  For the 2010-11 award year both of these provisions will be implemented.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

If you qualify for additional assistance, you may receive a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) ranging from $100 to $4,000 per year. Colleges award these grants to students with exceptional financial need. Priority is given to students receiving a Pell Grant.

BOGW (Board of Governors Fee waiver)

If you are a California resident, apply for Financial Aid, and demonstrate financial need or are determined eligible, you may be eligible for the Board of Governors Fee Waiver and your enrollment fees would be paid by the state.  BOGW applications are available in the Financial Aid Office. *Students will pay a health fee of $7.50 for full time students and $5.00 for part time students plus a $1.00 student rep fee.  These fees will no longer be waived for students who are eligible for the BOGW fee waiver.*

Cal Grant B

This grant provides a living allowance for very low-income students. More than half of all new Cal Grant B recipients begin at community college. The Cal Grant B award amount for first-year students is usually limited to living expenses, book, supplies, and transportation.

Cal Grant C

This grant helps vocational students with tuition and training costs. The maximum award has been $2,360 for tuition and fees, and $530 for tools, books, and equipment. Amounts may vary.

Federal Work-Study

If you're offered federal work-study as part of your financial aid package, we will assist you in locating a part-time job on-or off-campus. If possible, you'll be placed in work related to your studies or career plans, or in community service. In a work-study program, money earned from employment is used to help with educational costs.

Lassen Student Work Program

If you are not eligible for any "need-based" aid and will be enrolled in at least 12 units, this work program can help you pay Out-of-State tuition and California and Nevada enrollment fees. Contact the Financial Aid Office for additional eligibility requirements and for the Job Placement Procedures.

There are many scholarships available today to assist you with the cost of education. Remember, scholarships are gift aid and do not need to be repaid. Students are encouraged to seek outside scholarships.  Websites such as www.fastweb.com can provide many resources.
