When and How to Apply
Work with the financial aid office to make sure you meet the requirements and deadlines for all the financial aid programs you're applying for. File your financial aid application (FAFSA - see below) as soon as possible after January 1st. Talk to the financial aid office about priority deadlines and other important dates.
To apply for most financial aid, you'll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. Whether you apply on paper or electronically (www.fafsa.ed.gov), you should file only one FAFSA a year. Carefully review the instructions and complete the FAFSA accurately. Any mistakes will only delay the processing of your application. Be sure to keep a photocopy or a printout of your application. Also, save all the financial records you used to complete the FAFSA and your worksheets, because you may need them later if you're asked to verify any information.
The Lassen Community College school code is 001217. This code will need to be listed on your FAFSA application in order for your FAFSA information to be transmitted to the school. If you are a brand new student to Lassen Community College you must complete an Application for Admissions before your FAFSA will be transmitted.
Within four weeks of filing your FAFSA, or sooner if you filed electronically, you'll receive your Student Aid Report, or SAR. The SAR will report the information you provided on the FAFSA. If you do not receive your SAR within four weeks, or if you need another copy, call 1 (800) 433-3243 or check online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Financial Aid Eligibility
Before obtaining financial aid, students without a high school diploma or equivalent will be required by federal law to pass a Lassen Community College test demonstrating their ability to benefit from college instruction. Students wishing clarification should consult a Lassen Community College Counselor or the Financial Aid Office.
Students’ eligibility for Federal Student Aid in accordance with Federal Student Aid regulations, based on a first-come-first-severed basis and availability of funding. Student must meet required standards for maintaining eligibility for Federal Student Aid which are described in the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Procedures available online at http://www.lassencollege.edu/financial_aid-forms.html. Requirements for regaining eligibility lost for not meeting SAP requirements is contained within the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Procedures available online at http://www.lassencollege.edu/financial_aid-forms.html.
How Often to Apply
To continue receiving financial aid, you must reapply each year. Simply add any new information to the Renewal FAFSA, which you should receive at your home address in late fall. If you don't receive your Renewal FAFSA by January 15, complete a regular application. You can also reapply online. Most of the biographical information on the Renewal FAFSA will be the same information you provided last year. Write in only information that has changed, such as your income or family size, and complete any areas left blank.
Effects of Withdrawing, Dropping, or Failing
Who is affected?
Federal financial aid recipients who withdraw, drop or fail all of their courses in a term before completing more than 60% of the term are subject to repayment of some of the federal aid they received. Federal aid includes Pell Grant, FSEOG, ACG, and Stafford Loans.
Determination of Withdrawal
The date of withdrawal is based on the official records of the college in accordance with federal regulations. The federal repayment calculation is called R2T4 (Return to Title IV) and the amount to be repaid is based on a comparison of the amount the student actually received in federal aid to the length of time enrolled for the term. If a student stays enrolled for more than 60% of the term then the student is considered to have earned all of the aid received.
Repaying the Debt
You will be notified if you are required to repay a portion of your aid and will have 45 days to repay in full. Determination of repayment and allocation of aid to be refunded back to its source is done in the reverse order of awarding and in the following order: Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, Subsidized Stafford Loan, FSEOG, Pell Grant. If the amount owed is not repaid within those 45 days the debt will be referred to the U.S. Department of Education, and you will not be eligible to receive any additional federal financial aid at any school until the amount due is repaid in full, or satisfactory payment arrangements have been made with the U.S. Department of Education.
